4Eggcellent
By Pop Bop
Gordon and Benny are ordinary chicken brothers. Gordon goes to second grade at Sunnyside Elementary; he follows the adventures of "Rocket Rooster"; he gets along O.K. with younger brother Benny. But one day there is an accident at Uncle Quack's lab, and Gordon and Benny emerge with superpowers. Gordon tingles when danger is near, can flap like crazy, and crows superloud. Benny's shell is indestructible. With homemade supersuits they become Kung Pow Chicken and his sidekick, Egg Drop. It's time to fight crime and solve mysteries. In this one, Granny is feeding chickens mysterious cookies that cause them to lose their feathers, and then selling them sweaters. If Sunnyside Elementary, Uncle Quack, Kung Pow Chicken and Egg Drop didn't sort of clue you in to the humor here, well the book's subtitle is "Let's Get Cracking". You get a lot of chicken jokes - some are puns, some are just silly, and some are sort of sophisticated, (their teacher, Mr. Giblets, has a "comb over"; can a featherless chicken get goosebumps, and isn't that just a little bit wrong?).Gordon and Benny are smart, loyal, and resourceful chicken/kids, the plot moves along at a zippy pace, there's something funny to read or look at on every page, and the whole project has a very mellow and good humored feel. The kids at school are cheery and energetic; no bullies, no fart/booger humor; no odd scenes that break the rythm or have an odd tone to them. This is just cheerful, age appropriate adventure/mayhem. (And the kids are reminded to call home if superheroing will make them late for dinner.)This would be fun to read to while looking at the drawings, or read with since the vocabulary is manageable but not overly simple. It could be a read alone for a more advanced reader. The drawings are crisp and expressive and the layout is colorful and inviting; it's not set up as a comic so much as it is as an illustrated story, or as a picture book with captions and speech balloons. All in all this is a very engaging book and could be a nice choice for a kid with a beginning sense of the absurd, puns and clever silliness. A nice find. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

5Our 7-year old loves it

So happy I searched for Scholastic "Branches" books on Amazon! Our son is in second grade and I wanted to find books that would inspire him to read. Kung Pow Chicken and the "Notebook of Doom" series are his new favorites, just the right balance of illustration and story.

5POW!

This chicken-y Spiderman spoof hits the spot with young readers! Laugh-out-loud illustrations teamed with pun-filled action make a story that will inspire kids to write and draw their own super-hero adventures. I'm so glad there are more books in this series coming soon.
