I Am #11: Walt Disney Details

I am the creator of Mickey Mouse. I am Walt Disney.

As a child, I had a wild imagination and a great curiosity. As I grew up, I used those qualities to become a cartoonist. Eventually, I turned these drawings into films and began my own animation business. One of my characters, Mickey Mouse, became so popular that movie theaters sold out and I won an Academy Award. After pursuing a career as a film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, entrepreneur and entertainer, I added developer to my resume when I created Disneyland amusement park. I became tremendously successful and beloved by children of all ages because of my belief that even the impossible is possible. I am Walt Disney.

To this day, Walt Disney's characters remain some of the most recognizable images in the world. With books, TV shows, films, and amusement parks devoted to his creations, the Walt Disney name lives on. Learn all about this remarkable man's fascinating life in Scholastic's biography series, I AM.

5"DELIGHTFUL, INSPIRING, AND EDUCATIONAL!"
By Geraldine Ahearn
Grace Norwich delivers an interesting, and inspiring book about the life of the famous Walt Disney. I was anxious to gift this incredible, amazing book to my daughter, who admires Walt Disney, like millions of others throughout the world. as a 'special needs' child with learning disabilities, her attention span was excellent as we read through this book together. To my daughter, this book is a 'keepsake' that she will treasure. For myself, I also admire Walt Disney, so this was a great conversational piece for quality time well spent. After 8 visits to Disney World from N.Y. to Orlando, and a trip to Disneyland, we were able to remember the great achievements of Walt Disney. The author highlights Walt Disney's life from childhood, to his huge success. She discusses his extraordinary imagination, and great curiosity that led him to become a cartoonist. Included in the delightful pages of this book, Grace Norwich discusses Walt Disney's career as an animator; film producer; director; screenwriter; and more. In addition, the author tells about Walt Disney's voice, his acting, Walt Disney as an entrepreneur and entertainer. The illustrations are inviting, and compliment the story. The reader learns how he created Disneyland theme park, and how he became a big success, beloved by children all over the world. This inspiring book also includes: 10 things you should know about Walt Disney; the Walt Disney family museum; Walt Disney World; The Mickey Mouse Club; his first job in film; family life; and more.I remember faithfully watching the Mickey Mouse Club on TV, a popular variety show, which several of the Mouseketeers moved on to become big stars. The sweet memories of some of the performers included: Annette Funicello; Ryan Gosling; Justin Timberlake; Britney Spears; and others who are now famous. The story of Walt Disney's life is fascinating, inspiring, and educational! A very enjoyable read. Highly recommended to teachers, parents, child-care providers, and all Walt Disney fans!

3Told well and appropriate for the audience
By W. McCoy
I Am #11: Walt Disney is a young reader's history of Walt Disney. It tells the story of Walt Disney in 128 pages from his birth to his death. There are illustrations and pictures.I used to read a series of early readers called Step Up Books from Random House in which different historical figures were featured (my favorite was Meet George Washington). This series seems to be in the same vein, but for a slightly older group of readers. It reminds me of that earlier series, and I really enjoyed it.The book features a list of people who are key to the story you are about to read. It ends with a list of 10 things you should know about Walt Disney, then a second list of 10 more thanks that are pretty cool to know. There is a glossary and a list of places to visit. In this case places to visit include theme parks, but also the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco (which is an excellent museum) and Walt's home town of Marceline, Missouri. It's told in a kid friendly way, but harsh facts are not held back. You learn Walt's father was not a pleasant man, and that he lost his early creation, Oswald The Lucky Rabbit. It's well told and engaging.I was given a review copy of this book by Scholastic and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

5GREAT BOOK AT A KIDS LEVEL.
By Melissa Hess
My 9 year old daughter had to do a biography report on someone. This was a wonderful book to help her. It was perfect for her reading level, but still gave her a complete overview of Walt Disney's life.
