Enjoy the alphabet with this charming tale about a curious mouse and the delightful Eula from Square Cat, which School Library Journal said was “perfect for storytime or sharing one-on-one.”
Each letter of the alphabet tells the story of an adorable mouse who discovers Eula, a hip-yet-square cat, in her garden. Mouse wants a taste of his favorite vegetable, spinach, but our four-sided feline hates the green leafy stuff. Enter the threatening, pointed quills of a porcupine, and Mouse is ready to run! One letter leads to another and by the story’s end, Mouse and Porcupine are pals—and Eula might even try a taste of zesty spinach.

I purchased this book for my 7 year old and he has read the book over and over since it arrived and even brought it to school so his teacher could share with his class. He loves the illustrations and had fun as we took turns reading pages. I love the flow of the book and how the author incorporates each letter of the alphabet into the conversation between Eula and the mouse. The ending was great! We both got a BIG laugh out of Eula’s reaction to tasting spinach. Loved it!

An extremely charming and whimsical take on the alphabet, Square Cat ABC is a fantastic addition to Schoonmaker's "Square Cat" series. More Eula adventures please!

I was thrilled when my children were given this book as a gift recently. We loved the first book, "Square Cat" starring the delightful character, Eula, and were looking forward to her latest adventures. "Square Cat ABC" does not disappoint. My 6-year-old son immediately read the book to his 3-year-old sister, pausing to look at the colorful illustrations and laughing at the storyline. When he finished, he told us he loved the book and then he read it again, which is a rarity--although he loves to read, he is usually ready to move on to more physical activities. The author does a superb job of taking the concept of an ABC book to an entirely new level. This is something very different from your average A is for Apple, B is for Ball type of an ABC book. This book uses the alphabet in a fun, unique, and artistic manner to tell a story and a conversation between two friends--Eula Square Cat and the mouse. The letters of the alphabet stand out in the story and become visual delights as well as props for the illustrations. To me the biggest success of the book comes in the fact that it appeals to readers of all ages, including adults.
