By J.Prather
We never get to count the monkeys in Mac Barnett's hilarious Count the Monkeys. Uh Oh. I suppose that was a spoiler. Don't worry though, there are plenty of other fun things to count in this hilarious book that counts from 1-10 and ends at 0. Speaking directly to the audience, readers are repeatedly invited to count monkeys, but other things keep getting in the way. From the 1 King Cobra who scares off all the monkeys to the 10 Polka-Dotted Rhinoceroses with Bagpipes and Bad Breath, we are taken along a trail of mishaps and adventure as the reader must interact in different ways before turning the page. Whether young readers are covering their eyes, giving lumberjacks high fives, saying thank you six times to 6 sweet old beekeepers, this is definitely a book that requires active participation. One of the many things that make this book truly great is the fact that even with all the activity and hilarity, this is still a great book for learning to count. Each two page spread features a large number in bold print, with easily defined things to count. Young readers can easily see four bears, eight lumberjacks, nine lumberjacks (they invited a friend), and three crocodiles. Be careful, you have to move your hand in a zig zag before you turn the page so you can distract them. The illustrations are bold and colorful, with characters that are distinct and personable enough to invite many repeat readings. This is a must, must have for any story time leader searching for that perfect interactive read, or any preschool collection. Even if your young one already knows his or her numbers, don't deprive them of the fun to be had from this well told tale. Wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated, Count the Monkeys is a must have.

We know kids need counting books, but there are so many out there already, you need a fresh and original take for a concept book to stand out. Thankfully, that's what we have here from picture book author Mac Barnett and illustrator Kevin Cornell. COUNT THE MONKEYS is one truly funny counting book that you won't mind reading over and over again, with lots of word play and visual jokes.P.S. When you're through counting, take off the book jacket and check out the front cover.

This book is a favorite with my three year old daughter. She loves to interact with it--high-fiving lumberjacks and thanking little old lady bee-keepers. We read it over and over and we both still enjoy it!
