Influential artist Carson Ellis makes her solo picture-book debut with a whimsical tribute to the many possibilities of home.

Home might be a house in the country, an apartment in the city, or even a shoe. Home may be on the road or the sea, in the realm of myth, or in the artist’s own studio. A meditation on the concept of home and a visual treat that invites many return visits, this loving look at the places where people live marks the picture-book debut of Carson Ellis, acclaimed illustrator of the Wildwood series and artist for the indie band the Decemberists.

5The inspiring story of differences which make us special and valuable
By Denis Vukosav
‘Home’ made by Carson Ellis is one of those books for children that makes me sad I’m not child again and enjoy it as only a child can. Combined with beautiful illustrations, Carson Ellis in few words told and show to young readers all the different places that we can call our home, starting from those real to those that were made using wonderful imagination of author – making reader think what can be considered as place where we’re living, to which we look forward to.The joy starts from the moment when you take this beautiful hardcover picture book and start a journey through all the types of homes that you can think of. And some extra that only Carson Ellis can. Wherever you are going or dream to go, there is a place that can be called home – a home that moves or stands still, a home that is moody or in a good mood, home that can be built or it’s made by nature, on this planet or some other. The place to which we return that gives us comfort and strength, a place that offers calm and warmth. The home.Ellis chose to make this book using as less words as possible and while going through her book, browsing through the imaginative artwork she created, words seem almost redundant, because the pictures speak for themselves teaching the child about the differences in our lives, differences that draw us together, not divide, because we all have and all want home. No matter how it looks like, how worthy and where it is located. Just like the people that surround us with all their differencesTherefore, ‘Home’ is much more than just ordinary children book, it provides a chance for children 3 years and older to expand their minds with the thoughts about the world they are living in, teaching a valuable lesson of difference that makes each and every one of us special and valuable. And though this year is far from its ending, Carson Ellis ‘Home’ will certainly be one of the most original and inspiring stories for children told in this year, the book which I warmly wish success in all the best book competitions in which author and her book certainly would participate.

4A feast for the imagination!
By Janet Hamilton
Summary: With a single sentence on each page, Carson Ellis explores the concept of home. Some of her homes are real (“Home is an apartment”), and some are fanciful (“Atlantians make their homes underwater”). Each page is beautifully illustrated with many rich details.Pros: This book is a feast for the imagination. Kids will enjoy poring over the illustrations. There could be many ways to extend this into activities, such as researching homes around the world, or designing homes for different people or creatures.Cons: There’s not a straightforward narrative, and kids looking at this book on their own might find it a little confusing.
