By Teresa Robeson
I am a huge fan of Douglas Florian's work. His style has evolved over the years, but all his books are delightfully joyful with their deceptively simple yet actually brilliantly clever rhymes and engaging, colorful illustrations that not only draw a child in but are also frame-worthy works of art that an adult will appreciate. Many of his books - e.s. DINOTHESAURUS (one of my all-time favorites), COMETS, STARS, THE MOON, AND MARS, and POETREES - are also fun ways for kids to learn about subjects that they're interested in.One will also learn something in HOW TO DRAW A DRAGON. You'll learns just how much fun one can have with a fabled beast when a story is told with Florian's enchanting poetry and magnificent artwork. Each spread features colorful dragons from different countries' mythologies. Not only are the dragons multicultural, so are the children in the illustrations: all kids can see themselves in, and therefore relate to, this fantastical tale. A surprise pull-out ending page will leave a reader satisfied and wanted to go back to the beginning to read and admire the art over and over again! It is a perfect book for both a child reading on her own or as a participatory story-time read-aloud.

By Janet Hamilton
Summary: “Drawing a dragon isn’t hard/Drag a dragon to your yard.” So begins this rhyming treatise on how to draw every part of a dragon, from its bumpy head to its claws that also like to draw. Each rhyming couplet is illustrated with what looks like a child’s drawing of a kid sketching a dragon, often with the dragon’s assistance.Pros: The rhyme is catch and funny, but the pictures are what make this book such a winner. Kids will want to try their hands at sketching a dragon after reading this.Cons: Upon reaching the last page, you may find the urge to draw a dragon irresistible.

By mglass
Wonderful!! Such a treat to read a book to kids that doesn't pander to a low denominator, but instead celebrates the complexities of the crafts of both writing and art. I read through it straight with an effortless rhythm, but then flipped back through and settled on some pages for minutes at a time. Careful observation is rewarded with surprises on every page. The language is honed and transporting. Simply a brilliant effort. Bravo.
