"Only boring people get bored…Interesting people can always find something to be interested in."
That’s what Tom Trelawney’s father says, anyway. Tom shouldn’t have been interested in playing with matches but he was...bored. Now the shed is in ashes and strange Uncle Harvey is the only one willing to have him stay while his parents vacation
Tom soon discovers Harvey is going to South America on a treasure hunt and though nephews aren’t invited, he manages to tag along. Before it’s over he’ll drive a car, fire a gun and run for his life. Tom realizes that life may be about following the rules, but survival may be about breaking them.

I like this book. The action moves along quickly. It is well-written. It is "clean" (no profanity or sex). It is enjoyable to read. Good guys come out ahead whilst bad guys lose. The only thing I think could help is at the end too many things happened that didn't add to the story. For example, when the prison warden did what he did (don't want to say what that was and spoil it for those who haven't read it), that didn't really help the story I think. It would have been better not to throw in the little extra things like that. It would have been better to stick to the main events. However, that said, those even those things moved along quickly. In the end, this is a book I would allow any of my children to read. It is a fun and entertaining book to read.

My sons loved this great adventure filled story without a lot of curse words. just great writing.Tom is just your ordianary boy who gets into trouble when he burns down a shed. He has to spend a week with his Uncle Harvey, while his parents take a vacation. Harvey is basically a cheating lying conman, and has found a 450 year old piece of a disry and plans to return to Peru to search for the rest. Tom ends up going with him and actaully solves a lot of the clues to a real treasure. They get kidnapped, shot along the way to a real adveture.

By Benjamin Devey
Both my young sons and I enjoyed Island of Thieves. Josh Lacey pulls you in from the start and delivers a tale of adventure and intrigue. Tom Trelawney gets handed off to his uncle Harvey, who was off to Peru to handle some business. Tom insists that's not the way to take responsible for a minor, and tags along for the adventure. They get mixed in with an organized crime kingpin, and Harvey comes clean with Tom--He's on the trail of Francis Drake's buried treasure. The story moves along at a clip, keeping entertainment on top. Plenty of adventure, with a sensitivity to the moral issues of right and responsibility.
