My Weirder School #8: Dr. Nicholas Is Ridiculous! Details

A.J. and his friends are now third graders at Ella Mentry school in Dan Gutman’s outrageously funny chapter book series My Weirder School. In this eighth book, Dr. Nicholas Is Ridiculous!, college professor Dr. Nicholas visits A.J.’s class to help the students improve their standardized test scores in history. The weird thing is, Dr. Nicholas doesn’t care about the date Christopher Columbus came to America, who wrote the Declaration of Independence, or other important historical facts. She’s more interested in weird information like the history of the toilet bowl! Dr. Nicholas has even built a time machine to take the class on a field trip to the past and future. Who will get stuck in time? You’ll have to read to find out! Goofy illustrations by Jim Paillot make this adventure with Dr. Nicholas even more hilarious.

2Perpetuates the myth that school is uncool
By dunkalicious
My 6 year olds found this book funny-that's why I gave it an extra star. But the overall message of the book is that school is uncool which is not a message that I want to share with my kids. The main character makes fun of kids who study hard, and that's supposed to be funny. I regret buying this.

4Learning can be fun at Ella Mentry School!
By Marcie
Dr. Nicholas Is Ridiculous is the eighth book in the series, My Weirder School. In this book Ella Mentry School has to take a standardized state test, and the school ends up failing. They are given a short amount of time to prepare to re-take the test. So the principal hires a local college professor, Dr. Nicholas, to come and tutor the kids in history. Dr. Nicholas has unorthodox ways of teaching, but for once the kids are interested in what she has to say. In turn, the kids get excited about learning. If you've not read this series yet, don't worry; you can jump in at any time like I did. I've not had the pleasure of reading the first seven books in this series. I did enjoy this book. It shows the value of good teachers. Dr. Nicholas got the kids interested in learning, probably for the first time in their young lives. She not only talked about history, but she also tried to make it an experience. This book is aimed for kids ages 6-10. I think it fits perfectly into this age group. It has plenty of humor and silliness for the kids. They might also learn something about history, too.

4Isabella book review
By Isabella Backer
I thought this book was ok and not great. All the kids were all dumb and stupid. It was not a good idea to do that.
