No Dogs Allowed (Ready, Set, Dogs!) Details

Kate and Lucie are best friends. Kate is neat and Lucie is messy. Kate wakes up early and Lucie loves to sleep in. But both girls love, love, love dogs!

Unfortunately, Kate and Lucie live in apartments where dogs are not allowed. Instead of real dogs, they have dog T-shirts, dog sheets and pajamas, and dog books. But nothing is quite the same as having a real dog.

One day, the girls discover sparkly pink dog necklaces at the thrift store and try them on. But when they admire themselves in the mirror and give each other high fives, there is a pop and a whoosh and the girls are turned into dogs! Now it seems like Kate and Lucie won't need their own pet dogs . . . because they'll be having furry adventures of their own!

We read this electronically and my dd just loves it. The story is adorable and have good education value as well. The languages/words choices is very suitable for a M level reader.

My daughter LOVED this book! The story flowed well and kept her engaged. She loved the story of bff's and their fun. I loved that she didn't want to put it down. Can't wait for the second book!

3"We can't have dogs. But now we can BE dogs."
By Jason Kirkfield
This first entry in the Ready, Set, Dogs! series is a quick, fun read. It's pretty much a young girl version of The Shaggy Dog. Alternatively, think of a canine Freaky Friday. The girls' mothers are both single parents, living next-door in apartments. It is beneficial when books present different domestic situations, though it would have been useful to know how old the girls are. I didn't see an age or grade for the characters, although the recommended reading range is 6 to 9. Given that young readers want to read about slightly older protagonists, Kate and Lucie may be as young as 8. That would make the girls' independence a trifle troubling. For example, they walk to the thrift store alone (without parents). How safe is "Tuckertown"?Fictional caregiving concerns notwithstanding, the story is enjoyable, though obviously intended for a female audience. The vocabulary is repetitious: lots of pink and sparkly. It is unusual for such a book to be co-written by two authors, however this does not detract from the story's flow. I found it confusing that the story involves a radio DJ, and one of the boy characters is named DJ. Finally, the sequel is titled "Teacher's Pets" but maybe should have been titled "Dog Detectives" (see Chapter 12).3 ½ stars[The reviewer was provided with a complimentary copy of the book.]
