‘Stick and Stone’, a debut work by Beth Ferry accompanied with illustrations made by world-renowned artist Tom Lichtenheld is a beautiful story about the friendship, even where we least expect it.At the beginning of this story, a young reader will be introduced to the two main characters – Stick and Stone. Given that true friends know each other when they find themselves in trouble - Stick will rescue Stone why they two would become inseparable. But when a situation arises that the roles will turn, remains to be seen if Stone will be able to return favor he owes to his true friend…It’s always nice to witness the appearance of a new talented author on the scene, and Beth Ferry with her debut certainly manages to attract the attention. With her simple story with very few words, the author tells about the situation that children experience on a daily basis - unreturned friendship or maybe something that looks like that, because when we are young and small everything seems great, even the unreasonable disappointment because of some action or lack of it.Using a nice style, in an easy to understand manner even for the youngest kids, the friendship of two unusual characters is shown in humorous, though educating way that children will easily understand. As someone who for long time is enjoying the numerous children book series showing two friends in a variety of situations, I hope that ‘Stick and Stone’ is perhaps the beginning of a new series, because for something like that these authors and their characters certainly have potential. Therefore ‘Stick and Stone’ is another simple, yet indefinitely wise and educational title for kids that teaches about the value of friendship, something that is crucial for children to grow into happy and satisfied people.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.A delightful story of friendship
By Janet Hamilton
Summary: Stick and Stone are all alone until one day when Stick sticks up for Stone against the bullying Pinecone. They become best friends, exploring the world together, until one day a hurricane blows them apart. Fortunately, Stone finds his friend, stuck head-down in a puddle, and is able to affect a rescue (“You rock, Stone,”). Together, they make a perfect 10.Pros: A delightful story of friendship. The illustrations perfectly complement the rhyming text.Cons: I would have liked to see some redemption for Pinecone. It is merely hinted at on the last page.
