The Misadventures of Sweetie Pie Details

From two-time Caldecott winner Chris Van Allsburg, creator of Jumanji and The PolarExpress, comes a poignant story of one hamster’s struggle with destiny. Being a pet store hamster isn’t much fun for Sweetie Pie, but life in human homes proves downright perilous. As Sweetie Pie longingly gazes out of his cage at the squirrels frolicking in the trees, he wonders if he’ll ever have the chance to feel the wind in his fur. Allsburg’s expressive, soft-hued illustrations artfully capture a hamster’s-eye view of the wide and wonderful world where maybe, just maybe, Sweetie Pie could someday run free.

3I usually love the stories in Chris's books
By Margo Harpster
I usually love the stories in Chris's books, and look forward to his newest work. This is a disappointment. The way he usually weaves story details into the art and the twists in the plot are what make him award winning. Neither is up to his usual offering. After Queen of the Falls, all his earlier work...

1Favorite Author...Not Favorite Book
By Diane A
I am a long time fan of Chris Van Allsburg. One of my favorites being Bad Day at Riverbend. This book, however, has traumatized my husband. It has been two days since he read the book, and he's still talking about the poor hamster and not in a good way. Not sure what the point was of the poor treatment of the little hamster by those horrible children. I don't think the moral of the story out weighs the ongoing mistreatment of the hamster. It was not enjoyable to read. As always the quality of writing and illustrations were fabulous! I'm torn on this one!

1Really a bad book!
By Annie M
This an awful book for little children to read or be read to. The mean and irresponsible kids in the storyline really raise questions for young children. We are trying to teach our children to be thoughtful and caring of all living creatures and to be responsible human beings even as children. The treatment of the hamster in this book is despicable. The subliminal of this story could actually be it is okay to bully, reject and not care how others feel. I got a refund!
