5Neat & inspiring story, great illustrations
By zoe
A clever story with many dimensions and really detailed, absorbing illustrations. So much to discuss and examine with kids, and a great point of departure for making up stories together. My 4-year-old loves it! You won't exhaust this one quickly. Great gift for twins or siblings, but not just for them -- every kid will get the dynamic between Violet & Victor.

5The illustrations in this book are fantastic - bright
By Pete K.
The illustrations in this book are fantastic - bright, imaginative, and entertaining. The story is terrific - rather on the side for bigger small kids, ones who are learning to read, I think, and already understand that storybooks are written by real people. The book itself is all about writing a book! The narrative jumps between dialogue between Violet and Victor, sparring twins, and the great first story that Violet is trying to write, which Victor keeps interfering with. So, it's possible to read it to littler kids (3 or 4) but they would have to be sophisticated for their age, and the reader should be quite animated - be prepared to use a range of voices. I would think 6 or so is the perfect age for this book.

5The layers keep us coming back!
By Lori Bradford
This book is growing on us. At the surface it's cute, and well-thought-out. But at a deeper level, we appreciate the opportunity it provides to have meaningful conversations with our kids. Our kids, 5 and 3, didn't quite understand it at first - though they loved the illustrations from the start. They especially love the page with the castle and dragon 'circle time'. My husband and I acted out Victor and Violet's conversations, and now our kids love the story. They say it reminds them of themselves. As we play with different tones and delivery, we find that the story does echo daily life here in our household. Our oldest is NOT bossy, but is clever and bright, and our youngest does just wanted to play, even when that play means testing the oldest one's patience! As a mom, and a feminist, I love that Violet is a writer (and the whole library is full of her books, and more of her books). I hope that in future installments, Violet could try and pursue her ideas initially, instead of waiting to hear Victor's first, even if she drastically alters them. My husband loves the punctuated facts; "worms don't have ears" and the alliterations. We'll definitely be looking for more from this writer.
