A New Friend (The Adventures of Sophie Mouse) Details

In this first of a charming series about a little mouse and her forest friends, Sophie Mouse must convince her classmates—and herself—that a new student is nothing to fear. Even if he is a snake! Readers will delight in The Adventures of Sophie Mouse!

In the first book of The Adventures of Sophie Mouse, springtime has arrived at Silverlake Forest! The animals are coming out of their homes, buds are blooming on the trees, and the air smells of honeysuckles and tree bark. Sophie Mouse can’t wait to go back to school after the long winter break.

Even better, there’s a new student in class—Sophie loves meeting new animals! But the class gasps when Owen enters: he’s a snake! No one is brave enough to sit near him, or play with Owen at recess, or even talk to him. Can Sophie help her friends understand that Owen’s not scary after all?

With easy-to-read language and illustrations on almost every page, the Adventures of Sophie Mouse chapter books are perfect for beginning readers.

5A lovely early chapter book with a sweet cast of characters
By Dallas Mom
I am thrilled to have discovered this new little chapter book series! The story involves a new snake named Owen coming to join a classroom of animals. At first he is met with caution and a little unkindness because they have never met a snake before. Through a series of events and the advice of her parents, Sophie discovers that Owen is actually kind and fun and ultimately befriends him. I loved that the parental relationship is one of respect and trust. I love that when Sophie has the opportunity, she apologizes to Owen for not reaching out before. I love that through her example, the other kids open their heart to Owen. The entire tone of the book is sweet and lovely. I also loved the whole little animal community and enjoyment of nature---the animal families in this book reminded me of the Brambly Hedge books by Jill Barklem. It's also nice to find a chapter series that is not filled with modern characters with bad attitudes. There are some good series out there, but so many are junky and mindless. This has a classic, timeless quality. I read it aloud to my 3 year old daughter and she sat through all 100 plus pages. And it's a perfect early chapter book for my 6 year old reading son who loves snakes. And there is an illustration on every page, which kept everyone engaged. Can't wait to read the rest of this series!

4Perfect for beginning chapter book readers
By Janet Hamilton
Summary: Spring has arrived, and Sophie’s family is ready to leave the house. She and her little brother Winston are starting school, along with Sophie’s best friend Hattie the frog. On the first day, the students are startled to learn that their newest classmate is a snake. Owen seems nice enough, but none of the others have met a snake before. They’re so unfriendly to him, that he decides not to come back to school. A few days later, Sophie and Hattie are playing in the woods when Sophie falls down a hole. Owen is nearby and his long tail proves just the thing for rescuing Sophie. Their new friendship is enough to get Owen to give school another try.Pros: This is a charmingly illustrated series perfect for beginning chapter book readers. I felt as though I had landed in a 117-page Marjolein Bastin greeting card.Cons: I worried about Owen functioning in a classroom full of bipeds. Even a simple act like taking off his baseball card seemed like it would be a challenge.
