Ruby thought that it would be a great idea to get out the tea set and have a picnic. "Let's have a party!" she exclaimed. Her little brother, Max, and her best friend, Louise, along with her little sister, Lily, help her spread a little orange-colored cloth on the ground. Even Dagmar, Lily's doll, was going to have a spot of tea. Just as Louise pretended to pour a cup ... "CRASH! BANG!" Oh, my! It was not time for a tea party, but time to run for the house. Quick, quick, quick like a bunny they ran to escape the rain. It was really no fun being stuck in the house when they could be having a tea party picnic. "Rain rain, go away!" exclaimed Ruby. "Come again another day!" echoed Louise.It wasn't another day and they wanted to play. Grandma knew exactly what to do and that was to have a treasure hunt. "There are seven clues," she explained, "hidden in seven places in the house." Following those clues one by one would lead them to a treasure! Grandma began with a rhyme that would lead them to the first clue. Louise quickly guessed the answer and they ran to Max's sneaker under the chair and "inside was the first clue." Max and Lily couldn't read so Ruby read it to them: "I'm a little _____, short and stout. Tip me over and pour me out!" There were six more clues. Where would they lead them and what would that treasure be?This Max and Ruby story is a wonderful, interactive tale young children will love. Each of the seven clues Grandma has for them is in the form of a "Lift-the-Flap" note that is perfect for little hands. Although little children, like Max and Lily, will be unable to read them, most will be able to guess the answers. Upstairs and downstairs the bunnies make their way around the house finding the envelopes. Naturally, they have forgotten that they are bored and are quite excited as they figure them out. The artwork is toddler terrific as usual and captures the excitement as the bunnies race through the house. Max and Ruby fans no doubt will adore this story, but if you aren't familiar with them, this is one treasure that will be read time and time again!

My pre-K class loved looking for the treasure clues and thinking about where to look for the next clue. It kept the class engaged and helped with learning nursery rhymes.
