Help hungry crows avoid a feline foe in this clever concept book from the author of The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp and The Underneath.
One, two, three, crows in a tree, bedecked in red scarves and hungry as can be. So they fly out of their nest with snacking in mind, and snack they do. Snack one, snack two, snack three—all the way to a dozen! But before they have time to complain about bellyaches, they have a bigger problem: a cat has been eyeing them…as potential snacks! Can these well-fed crows become well-FLED crows? Read and find out in this counting book from Newbery Finalist and two-time National Book Award Nominee Kathi Appelt, with spot-on illustrations from Rob Dunlavey. It’s the cat’s meow!

Perfect counting book for PreK-1. Illustrations are fun and the rhyming is unique. Bought this for my 2 and 4 year old granddaughters (big hit), but I plan to give it as gifts to my kindergarten teacher friends as well. Great possibilities for counting to 12 and grouping by threes. Illustrations are cute without being overwhelming. Also like the use of number words for the counting. Could be set up to use for backward counting as well and matching words to numerals as related activities. This is the type of book that can be enjoyed with repeated readings without being tiresome…..

By Janet Hamilton
Summary: Crows are counted in groups of three up to twelve in rhyming text. (“One, two, three/crows in a tree/three roly-poly bugs/three ripe mangos/three for the counting crows/three, by jango!”). When a cat counts the twelve crows tails, it’s time to fly away.Pros: The rhymes are very catchy, reminiscent (to me) of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Simple but striking illustrations, all in black, white, and red. The groupings of the crows could be used as an introduction to multiplication as well as counting.Cons: Crows are kind of annoying.

Kathi has done it again. Her sense of rhyme and story is just fun. This counting book is one that I know that my grandson will enjoy over and over and I can read multiple times.I will never look at those crows in the same way again. My grandson and I will be counting them the Kathi Appelt way.
