Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads Details

Drywater Gulch has a toad problem. Not the hop-down-your-britches, croaking-all-night toad kind of problem. The thievin', hootin' and hollerin', steal-your-gold never-say-thank-you outlaw toad kind of problem.

Then hope rides into town. Sheriff Ryan might only be seven years old, and he might not know much about shooting and roping. But he knows a lot about dinosaurs. Yes, dinosaurs. And it turns out that knowing a thing or two about paleontology can come in handy when it comes to hoodwinking and rounding up a few no-good bandits. From Bob Shea and Lane Smith comes this hilarious picture book, Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads.

5I can imagine it being a storytime favorite for slightly older kids
By Ruby
Hysterical, but I would bump the age recommendation up a bit. I laughed out loud several times reading it myself, bBut, when I shared it with a couple kids, aged almost 5 and 3.5, almost all the jokes sailed over their heads. Kindergarten- 3rd grade would be more likely to get all the humor. I can imagine it being a storytime favorite for slightly older kids.

5Rootin' Tootin' Read-Aloud Fun ...

“Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads” is a rootin’ tootin’ fun-filled book that is a delightful read aloud choice. Bob Shea has given readers a quick-witted hero, Ryan – albeit one who rides into town on his trusty tortoise and seems to be more a paleontologist than he is a sheriff. In the end, Ryan staunches the wave of crime that has descended on Drywater Gulch and locks up the nefarious Toad Brothers. Declining the offer of a job as town paleontologist since he is a lawman, he rides his trusty tortoise off into the sunset. The text of “Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads” incorporates the syntax and vernacular associated with cowboys and the “Old West”. Parents or grandparents reading this book aloud should be prepared to step into character and embrace the dialog. This book will delight young listeners and amuse adult readers.Lane Smith’s illustrations are cartoon-like; they will appeal to the target audience. Adults will appreciate the subdued colors and the subtle details he incorporates into each drawing. If you are looking for a fun and fun-to read aloud book, you will definitely want to consider “Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads”.
