One cranky caper is about to learn that being salty might be just as good as being sweet.
Having adults love his acidic taste is not enough for Mr. Caper. He wants more. He wants the children of the world to love him—just as much as they love the sweet, saccharine Lollipop.
And thus a plot is hatched: Caper-flavored lollipops are dispatched throughout the world...and everything goes horribly wrong. Will Mr. Caper find a way to repair the havoc he’s wreaked by over-reaching? Maybe, if Lollipop helps save the day!
This quirky tale, illustrated with humor and heart, contains sweet and salty delights for both adults and children.

By Valerie A. Baute
The Great Lollipop Caper sounds like a grand adventure for a lollipop. In a way it is, but it's actually referring to the "pickled flower bud" type of caper. Lollipop is loved by kids, and caper wants to be loved by them also. He must find a way to make the kids like his sour taste. After his trick to convert the kids to his side backfires, the parents stop liking him too. After some help from Lollipop, Caper is left feeling more alone than ever. Maybe being yourself is a better idea than disguising as someone else to get people to like you.Why did I not think of the genius idea of using actual capers in a picture book? Kids should find the humor in this while still learning the lesson that it's best to just be yourself. Even though the caper is a pickled sourpuss that goes to pretty mean measures to get kids to like him, I was still rooting for him in the end.I am always looking for read-aloud books for a variety of ages. While the story here would be perfect for kindergartners or older, there are a bit too many speech bubbles. Some people might be able to pull off reading it to the right group of children, but I don't see myself tackling that job. This is a great book to read individually with children probably in the 4-7 range. By four, I believe they would be able to understand the book with only a little bit of explaining. As they get older, they will be able to understand it on there own. Sitting down with the kids, you can point out the speech bubbles, and they will be able to figure out which characters are talking. Added bonus, kids get to learn what a caper is!

This is one of our favorite books. My five year old daughter knows it by heart. It's clever and has a nice moral to the story with some parts the grown ups will find amusing as well.

Lollipop and Caper have a disagreement when Caper decides he is jealous of the love kids have for Lollipop so he decides to change things by sneaking into the Lollipop factory and souring and Capering the batter! This trick backfires and we have a happy ending that satisfies everyone. Fantastic drawings and a sweet (and sour!) story make this a winner!
